  1. In Australia the Dtap vaccine (acellular pertussis vaccine) was not phased in until 1999-2004 (over a 4 year period). Prior to this we were using the whole cell pertussis vaccine and fully vaccinated communities in Australia (with 85-90% vaccination rates in infants) were still having ourbreaks of whooping cough through the 1990’s. There were 9 deaths in 1997-98 as vaccination rates were increasing and only 1 death per year for the previous 20 years before that.
